How it works

A Doom-themed memecoin surged more than 1,000% after designer Sandy Petersen bought in, then surrendered most of the gain.

DOOM, an unofficial Solana memecoin named after the 1993 game, which launched via Pump.fun, rebounded from a reported market capitalization of about $600,000 to roughly $7.4 million on August 4, a gain of around 1,100%.

But the rally quickly reversed
By late Wednesday, its market capitalization had fallen to about $1.7 million, nearly 80% below the peak, while total trading volume since launch stood at roughly $5.2 million, according to data from DEX Screener.

The surge followed public support from Sandy Petersen, a level designer who worked at id Software, the studio behind Doom, and helped create levels for the original game and Doom II.

Petersen joined a live X discussion about the project that drew more than 1,300 listeners. He later thanked the token's community and said he planned to help it grow.

  • Petersen, who later founded tabletop publisher Petersen Games, created or adapted 20 levels for the original Doom and designed 17 levels for Doom II.
