How it works

Apple has published new rules for its upcoming Apple Maps advertising business, excluding several categories of advertisers before the service launches in the U.S. and Canada.

  • The policy, titled Apple Advertising Services News and Stocks, Maps, and Sports Programming Policies, took effect on July 14 and outlines categories that are prohibited from appearing in Maps advertising.
  • Among the restricted categories are crypto ATMs, a category that includes businesses operating Bitcoin ATMs and other machines that provide access to crypto.
"Ad content must not promote specific securities (e.g., stocks, bonds, notes, warrants, options, mutual funds), cryptocurrencies or similar digital asset tokens, initial public offerings, initial coin or token offerings, and other coin, token offerings, or cryptocurrency offerings."

Apple

Apple is also blocking ads for home service businesses, including plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, HVAC providers, and other services.

The restrictions mark a more curated approach compared with Google, whose Maps advertising ecosystem includes local service categories.

The move comes as Apple prepares to introduce Maps ads, a new advertising product expected to roll out in the U.S. and Canada this summer.

  • Apple has said businesses will be able to promote locations inside Maps search results while keeping advertising data tied to user interactions on the device rather than sharing it with third parties.
  • There are more than 28,300 active Bitcoin ATMs operating worldwide as of mid-2026, down nearly 28% from the end of 2025, with the decline driven largely by the U.S. market amid tighter regulation, according to data from Coin ATM Radar.
