Pyth's price history now has a permanent gap after Solana outage

A hosting failure that knocked nearly 30% of Solana's stake offline also stopped Pyth's paid market-data service from producing prices.

How it works

Pyth, a crypto market data provider, said Friday that Pyth Pro, its paid price service for institutions and trading platforms, produced no prices during the Aug. 12 incident.

  • The missing historical prices and OHLC candlesticks, records of an asset's opening, high, low and closing prices, "will not be backfilled," according to the company's status page.
  • The incident page labels the disruption a full outage affecting Pyth Pro's API and WebSocket streaming endpoints.

Pyth began publicly investigating at 3:49 am UTC and marked the incident resolved at 4:24 am. The timestamps are 35 minutes apart, but Pyth didn't specify the exact period for which prices are missing.

It also didn't identify the affected price feeds or customers or say whether any trading platforms experienced disruptions because of the missing data.

Half of Pyth's messaging nodes went offline

Pyth attributed the outage to Teraswitch, an infrastructure provider that hosted two of its four NATS messaging nodes.

When both nodes became unreachable, the messaging system lost the majority needed to continue operating and Pyth's dependent Router services became unavailable.

Pyth said it had already been working to reduce its dependence on individual infrastructure providers. It now plans to add another provider and distribute critical services across systems that shouldn't fail together.

The same failure nearly stopped Solana finality

Teraswitch said the wider incident began when a malformed route originating from its Miami site spread through its network and caused 12 sites across Europe and Asia to lose connectivity.

Service was restored at 4:16 am UTC after engineers removed Miami from the provider's private backbone, according to Teraswitch's incident report.

  • The routing failure also knocked more than 28.8% of Solana's staked tokens offline, according to staking provider Marinade.
  • That left Solana about 4.5% below the level at which transactions would stop becoming final.

Solana itself didn't halt. Blocks continued to be produced and the affected validators returned after Teraswitch restored connectivity.

The missing Pyth records provide another consequence of the same failure. Unlike the disrupted Solana validators, which returned online, the absent Pyth price history will remain unavailable.
