Hunter Biden, the son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, turned a loose political thread into a crypto spectacle after replying "Hyperliquid" when asked how he would fight Washington's anti-crypto wing.
Biden started the thread on Friday, June 5, with a long post listing issues he said "most Americans agree on," including groceries, tariffs, congressional stock trading, debt, immigration, wars, AI and culture-war topics.
The post quickly picked up attention after Gmoney, a prominent NFT collector and trader with nearly 320,000 followers on X, joked that Hunter Biden was "going to run for president," prompting Biden to ask whether he would help with "the crypto vote" before Gmoney pressed him on his crypto stance and Sen. Elizabeth Warren's "anti-crypto army."
Biden replied with only one word, "Hyperliquid," which now works almost like a loose endorsement badge among X users clustered around Hyperliquid, a Layer-1 blockchain and decentralized crypto perpetuals exchange of the same name.
- Shortly after Biden's "Hyperliquid" reply, his odds on Polymarket's 2028 presidential market jumped from about 0.7% to 3%, while California Gov. Gavin Newsom still led the market at 25%.
Biden also isn't completely new to crypto. His official art website, where he sells his paintings, recently added a "Bitcoin accepted" notice, with Verisart, a blockchain-based service for authenticating artwork, also listed on the site.
- The Hyperliquid mention also comes as the platform is already on Washington's radar. ICE and CME, two of the world's largest exchange operators, have reportedly urged U.S. officials to rein in Hyperliquid's oil-linked trading.
- Hyperliquid co-founder Jeff Yan shortly reacted to those reports, saying that he had been in Washington discussing on-chain derivatives and a regulatory path for U.S. access, though without providing any details.
Update June 5, 6:54 p.m. UTC. Added Polymarket odds showing Hunter Biden's 2028 presidential market chances rising after the post.
