Loopring, an Ethereum Layer-2 project that helped pioneer zkRollup-based trading, shut down its decentralized exchange after saying the product "never gained meaningful adoption."
The team said in a June 28 post on X that Loopring DEX would stop all trading services immediately and that its relayer was going offline.
- The shutdown applies to DEX only, not necessarily every Loopring product or the LRC token.
Loopring said it was built from a cypherpunk idea that zero-knowledge proofs could help scale Ethereum.
But the team admitted that the product "lacked a virtual machine – no composability, no real‑world payment use cases," adding that "that limitation kept our ecosystem from growing."

Why Loopring is shutting the DEX
As the Loopring team argued, the DEX lacked real-world payment use cases and never built enough business development muscle to turn the technology into a larger ecosystem.
Most painfully, Loopring said its specialized architecture now feels obsolete because modern zkEVMs are compatible with Ethereum smart contracts.
External pressure added to the problem as Loopring pointed to major LRC exchange delistings in 2026, after Binance said it would delist LRC on April 1 and Binance.US, the U.S. arm of Binance that operates as a separate entity, said it would remove LRC on May 27.
What happens to user funds
Loopring reassured user assets are safe and that the team will return funds directly to users' wallets on Ethereum's mainnet.
Instead of asking users to submit Merkle proofs themselves, the team said it will publish final balances, leave the list open for review for two weeks, then send eligible balances in batches.
Accounts with less than $10 in final value will be excluded from the distribution.
- Loopring said it will cover transaction costs and convert liquidity pool positions into the underlying token balances at the time of shutdown.
