DL News gets new owners. But DefiLlama says "don't trust anything" from it

DefiLlama says new owners have taken over DL News and its assets, weeks after the crypto publication said it was shutting down.

DL News/The Coinformer

DL News, a crypto media site originally launched as DefiLlama's news arm, may be coming back under new owners, though the site is no longer affiliated with DefiLlama in any way.

"New owners have taken over the DL News website and assets. We expect them to resume posting soon," DefiLlama wrote in an X post on July 2.

DefiLlama also said that the crypto news site is "no longer affiliated with DefiLlama in any way," adding that it couldn't corroborate any information about outreach.

  • DefiLlama also said future posts from DL News shouldn't be treated as endorsed by DefiLlama.

DefiLlama's pseudonymous lead developer 0xngmi went even further, urging users in an X post not to trust DL News, without elaborating on the matter.

"pls don't trust anything from DL News. It got sold, so it has absolutely no connection to defillama now."

The developer added in a follow-up post they wouldn't have sold DL News, though no details were given.

"Obviously I wouldn't have sold it but it was not owned by me. After dlnews shut down we even tried to purchase it as defillama just to fully close it, but it wasnt possible."

The acquisition comes less than two months after DL News said it was closing, though DefiLlama didn't disclose who bought the website or how much they paid.

In a May 7 post, DL News said it launched in 2022 as the news arm of DefiLlama, but was never meant to operate as a public good and had failed to become a profitable standalone business.

"Unlike DefiLlama, however, DL News was never conceived as a public good. It was supposed to become a real, profitable business. Welp. That did not happen."

DL News director Paige Aarhus
  • DL News' closure came with a messy background. In its May shutdown post, Aarhus said a 2023 fight inside DefiLlama over a possible DefiLlama token launch left DL News "effectively separated" from the crypto data platform it was built alongside.
  • At the time, Aarhus also said that in May, traffic across crypto and tech media had fallen sharply, while AI-driven aggregation made it harder for original journalism to reach readers. The company began layoffs in mid-April and told staff on May 1 that DL News would close at the end of the month.
